Deerfield Youth
BasketBall Leagues

League Values

  • HAVE FUN!
  • Skill development of all children involved
  • Social development – meet new friends and learn how to interact positively with others in a team environment
  • Develop good sportsmanship – positive attitudes and attributes that can be applied to everyday life

Practices & Games

  • Each team will be assigned one 1-hour practice on a week night at area schools. Practice will be held after 6:30 pm.
  • Practices are assigned based on coach preferences. Please note any days that your child cannot practice on the player information form. Contact the park district for options if there is a conflict with your assigned practice time.
  • Each team will play one 1-hour game per week on Saturdays scheduled within the range of times printed in the brochure.
  • Game schedules will be handed out at practices and posted on our web site.

Team Selection

  • NO REQUESTS WILL BE ACCEPTED FOR ANY GRADE LEVEL.
  • Skill evaluations (not try-outs) are run for the purpose of distributing talent as evenly as possible throughout the league. As much as we try, this is not a scientific process.
  • Every player should plan on attending their assigned skill evaluation time listed below.
  • Everyone who signs up will be placed on a team regardless of attendance at the skill evaluations.
  • A player information form must be filled out with basketball registration. The form can be downloaded from the park district web site or picked up at the registration desk.

Volunteer Coaches

Volunteer coaches staff all of our youth basketball leagues. The basketball program is one that requires a lot of energy from a thoughtful, creative, concerned group of volunteer coaches comprised of parents and other adults who love sports and instructing children.

You have a unique opportunity to make a difference in a child’s life. For every player the coach is the single most important adult leader. Effective coaches fully support a positive youth sports philosophy in their attitude and behavior at practice, games and events. You will help the players learn skills, discuss fair play and most of all, have fun. Look at coaching as an opportunity not only to teach sports skills, but also to achieve something far more significant - helping children reach their full potential.

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer coach we need you to fill out a Coach Application. You can download the application from our web site, www.deerfieldparkdistrict.org, or you can pick one up at the registration desk at Jewett Park Community Center, 836 Jewett Park Drive.

Don’t know if you have the knowledge or skills to coach? Deerfield Park District will offer coaching clinics for new and experienced coaches. The Park District also has a library of resources and access to plenty of other materials to make your coaching experience as rewarding as possible. ASEP(American Sport Education Program) training is required for all coaches who have not been certified by ASEP or another approved course (must have proof). This course is designed to give the youth coach necessary, basic information on how to coach children, keep practices safe, and prepare for practices and games. You will be able to take the course on-line and must have it completed by your first practice. You will receive a code to take the course once you turn in your application.

Skill Evaluations All children in the league must attend skill evaluations. Coaches should be on hand to rate the players. Time and Location for skill evaluations will be posted as the season gets closer.

Coach Meetings All coaches will need to attend a general meeting and a player selection meeting for their specific league. We will cover league specific information and select the teams based on the skill evaluations. All the meetings will be at the Sachs Recreation Center.
